UPDATE ON MANQUILLO’S FITNESS
Cronin took to Twitter to share an update from Howe’s Friday press conference, revealing that Manquillo has returned to his homeland for treatment and estimating how long he will be out. He stated:

“Javier Manquillo is currently in Spain receiving knee injections.

“The full-back is expected to miss three to four weeks.”

The boss went on to say:

“He’s just got a ball on the end of his foot, which has twisted his knee slightly. It’s an odd mechanism.

“He’s been in Spain getting injections. I believe he’ll be back here tomorrow, and we’re hoping to build him up quickly from there.”

If everything goes as planned, Howe expects the 28-year-old to build back up ‘quite quickly’.

Manquillo has only made three appearances across all competitions this season, having been in and out of the squad, but given his previous numbers, Howe will be relieved to have him back.

During the 2021/22 season, the Chinchon native averaged 2.1 tackles, two assists, and one goal in 15 top-flight starts, demonstrating his ability to impact the game on both ends of the pitch (WhoScored).

Former Magpies manager Steve Bruce has also described Manquillo as a ‘terrific’ player, and whether he starts every week or not, with the hectic fixture schedule, he is a hugely useful option to have in the building at St. James’ Park.
