Leeds United look set to be without midfielder Tyler Adams for a minimum of 10 weeks after his surgery on a hamstring issue, according to Dr. Rajpal Brar.
The USA international was ruled out of the dramatic win at Molineux on 18 March after picking up an injury in training, and it emerged on Tuesday (28 March) that he has now had to undergo an operation which the club has clarified to Sky Sports was “non-invasive”.
Amid fears that the 24-year-old is out for the rest of the season, injury expert Dr. Brar has commented on the situation and confirmed that a typical prognosis for this sort of problem would end Adam’s campaign right here.
Responding to the news on Twitter Dr. Brar wrote: “Tough news, esp for Leeds. Looking at 10+ weeks out typically”.
The major blow comes on top of fellow key men Max Wober and Willy Gnonto both being doubts about the 1 April trip to Arsenal after going off hurt on international duty.
On that front at least Phil Hay reported for The Athletic on Monday (27 March) that the club is “optimistic” neither are set for long absences, but Adams appears to be the other extreme.
Worst outcome
It is yet to be officially confirmed, and the club may even be holding off on announcing such negative news, but it would be a surprise to see the US captain again this season.
The last game of the season is just under nine weeks away when United welcomes Tottenham to Elland Road on 28 May so it looks like his debut campaign in England is over.
That leaves a significant hole at the base of the Whites’ midfield that Javi Gracia will have to find a way to adequately fill if he is to keep the resurgence up the Premier League on pace.
Marc Roca and Weston McKennie played 90 minutes in the 4-2 win at Wolves but neither fill the same role as Adams so Gracia may be forced into a rethink over a longer-term solution.
Darko Gyabi has barely had a sniff of first-team action despite impressing for the under-21s, so he will surely be disappointed if he doesn’t get a look in now after his summer arrival from Manchester City.
Adams was the signing of the season prior to the World Cup, and while the subsequent emergence of fellow injury concerns Gnonto and Wober has probably since eclipsed him, there was a reason he has started every game he has been available for and never been substituted in the top flight so this news is damaging.
