‘Levy has gone a little cold’: Spurs chief now not keen on ‘best manager in world

Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has “gone a little cold” on the prospect of hiring Mauricio Pochettino.

The transfer insider told GiveMeSport that, while Pochettino to Spurs would be “the easiest appointment” PR-wise, it may not necessarily be “the best appointment”.

Pochettino has regularly been linked with a return to Tottenham over the past few years. And speculation is now at its peak.

With Spurs looking for a new manager and the Argentine currently out of work, there’s not much that stands in their respective ways.

A number of Spurs players, as well as plenty of fans, seem eager to bring Pochettino back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

‘The fans are singing his name

Jones, writing on GiveMeSport, began by talking about Luis Enrique no longer being a prime target for Chelsea.

He then spoke of how Spurs have two paths they can go down. An established manager with a solid CV, or a hungry up-and-coming coach.

“That’s kind of what Pochettino did when he came in from Southampton,” said Jones.

“And of course, there is still that temptation to actually go for Poch and bring him home.

“It’s an idea that I’m told Levy has gone a little cold on.

“But the fans are singing his name. He is out of work. And there are still those memories that live on of what he was able to do when in charge last time.

“In a PR sense, it is the easiest appointment – but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best appointment.

“It’s going to be a tough call. At the moment, we don’t know for sure that Spurs will make a decision before the end of the season.

“I do think that’s the aim. I think they would like to end on a positive note and with some optimism in time to go into the summer transfer window and continue talks with Harry Kane over a new contract, but it is still a little cloudy.”

Tottenham chief needs to make his mind up as Chelsea circle – our view

Pochettino obviously knows what it takes to shine at Tottenham, having done so between 2014 and 2019.

In Andros Townsend’s words, he is the “best manager in the world”.

However, the risk with Pochettino is that he has a legacy at Spurs. And this could be tarnished if things don’t go to plan in his second spell.

And who can say for sure that the issues that culminated in the Argentine getting the sack first-time round aren’t still present?

After all, Antonio Conte reportedly had a wish list last summer but ended up getting players he didn’t particularly want instead.

Nevertheless, Levy needs to decide quickly whether he wants to go for Pochettino. He is reportedly talking to Chelsea.
