It is alleged he breached Football Association rules, which ban players from placing bets or passing on information that could be used for betting, between 22 January 2014 and 18 March 2017.

Toffolo, who played for Norwich, Swindon, Rotherham, Peterborough, and Scunthorpe during that period, has one week to respond to the charges.

The 27-year-old joined Nottingham Forest from Huddersfield Town 12 months ago and made 19 Premier League appearances last season as Steve Cooper’s side avoided relegation

Forest kick-start the 2023-24 campaign against Premier League runners-up Arsenal on August 12.

Toffolo’s charges come after Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney was banned for eight months after admitting to 232 breaches of FA betting rules.

Toney, who has since been diagnosed with a gambling addiction, will not be permitted to play until January 2024.

‘I am naturally disappointed that I will be unable to play for the next eight months,’ the 27-year-old wrote on social media in May. ‘I now focus on returning to play the game I love next season.’
