The Cameroonian is one of the main targets for the Red Devils because of the club’s lack of an experienced first-team goalkeeper. David De Gea left the club upon the expiry of his contract, as the club were unable to form a deal with the player. As a result, Onana will expect to be the club’s starting keeper the moment he makes the move to Old Trafford official.

United’s leadership are specifically looking at the Serie A star thanks to his proficiency with his feet. At the World Cup, the goalkeeper drifted out of his box repeatedly, offering another option for a pass to his feet. Under a manager that likes to build out from the back such as Erik ten Hag, this skill is a must.

One of the Most Expensive Goalkeepers Ever

Due to the size of the fee United’s ownership are expected to pay, Onana becomes one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time. Kepa Arrizabalaga is top of the list at a figure approaching £70 million, with Gianluigi Buffon’s move to Juventus being the most expensive move without a Premier League side’s involvement at £45 million.

Romano listing the Cameroonian keeper after Buffon implies that he is the fourth most expensive goalkeeper of all time, falling between £35 million (Ederson to Manchester City) and the Italian icon’s fee. In all likelihood, this brings the spending at Old Trafford to over £100 million for the summer, combined with the cost of midfielder Mason Mount. Centre-forward is now the position the club is likely to focus on, with no recognised number nine available to Ten Hag.
