New Coventry City signing comes ‘highly recommended’ by Manchester City legend

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as Mark Robins talks about the latest addition to his Sky Blues squad

Latest Coventry City signing Bobby Thomas came ‘highly recommended’ from Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany.

The Sky Blues have signed the 22-year-old centre-half from newly promoted Premier League Burnley for a reported £2million. The defender travelled with Mark Robins’ squad to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday but didn’t feature in the 1-1 pre-season friendly draw

Thomas spent last season on loan at Bristol Rovers and then Barnsley, scoring three goals for each club, and helping the latter get all the way to the play-off final at Wembley where the Tykes narrowly lost out on promotion to Sheffield Wednesday.

Although yet to test himself in the Championship, Robins insists: “He’s a really promising defender. He hasn’t played at this level yet but at 22 years of age he’s someone we can work with. He’s 6ft 4, a big lad and has great character and he’s going to push every step of the way to make a really strong career for himself.

“He’s clearly still got things to learn but we like him. He’s a really good addition. He’s got enough pace and he’s aggressive. He’s decent on the ball, he sees it early and takes it with good touches.”

He added: “And he came really highly recommended from Vinny Kompany as well. We knew anyway because we’d done our homework on him but there was an affirmation from Vincent, so that’s interesting.

“He’s the type of player we like; it’s what we do in terms of developing players and the players coming in are giving us a chance to stock the team.”
