Argyle record-breaker player signs first deal

Plymouth Argyle’s youngest-ever player Freddie Issaka has signed his first professional contract.

Issaka, who celebrates his 17th birthday on Friday, is a Wales Under-17 international and joins the professional ranks almost two years after his senior debut.

The attacker played in an EFL Trophy game at Newport County on 31 August 2021, aged 15 years and 34 days.

He made his EFL league debut last November as a substitute at Lincoln.

“This pre-season he has flourished even more with the first team and thoroughly deserved his pro contract,” said Argyle first-team coach and head of player development Kevin Nancekivell.

“He really deserves his contract, and we look forward to working with him for many years to come.”

The Pilgrims’ academy product and Wales under-17 international has featured regularly in the first team squad throughout pre-season

Plymouth Argyle’s youngest-ever player, Freddie Issaka, signed his first professional contract on his 17th birthday today.

Truro-born Issaka made club history when he made his first team debut, as a substitute in an EFL Trophy tie away to Newport County in August 2021, at the age of 15 years and 34 days.

Earlier this summer he and Argyle first-year apprentice Joe Hatch played for Wales at the European Under-17 Championship finals.

Issaka has played regularly in the Pilgrims’ pre-season games this month and scored the winning goal in a 1-0 defeat of Scottish Premiership side Hearts in Spain.

Argyle head of player development Kevin Nancekivell told the club’s official website: “It is fantastic news that Freddie has signed a pro deal. Freddie has done great since he has been here as an under-12.

“This pre-season he has flourished even more with the first team and thoroughly deserved his pro contract. We look forward to working with him for many years to come.

“It’s a testament to all the hard work that goes on in the academy. The academy coaches work endless hours for not a lot of praise, so credit to them for producing yet another good player that hopefully we can help develop further.”
Issaka made five substitute appearances in Argyle’s run to the EFL Trophy final last season and also came off the bench in stoppage time at the end of a 1-1 League One draw away to Lincoln City in November 2022.
