Manchester United is interested in a defender who is a former teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong.
The 21-year-old has five goals in 11 Bundesliga appearances this season, as well as two Champions League assists.
The six-time Netherlands Under-21 international has been named to Louis van Gaal’s provisional 39-man Netherlands World Cup squad, which includes Tyrell Malacia but does not include Donny van de Beek.

The attacking-minded right-back is currently under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso, who previously worked with Raphael Varane, Casemiro, and Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

Frimpong, who was a product of the Manchester City Academy, moved to the BayArena from Celtic in January 2021.

The pacey full-back made the switch to the Bundesliga giants after making 51 appearances for the Hoops, from which he scored three goals and laid on eight assists.

In his first season at Celtic Park, Frimpong won the treble with the Scottish giants.

Frimpong scored twice and provided eight assists in his first full season with Leverkusen.

His contract with Alonso’s side expires in 2025 but according to Plettenberg, Erik ten Hag is interested in signing his fellow countryman in either the January or summer transfer window.

While Diogo Dalot is rapidly fulfilling his potential as one of the most talented right-backs across Europe, it seems the former Ajax manager is keen to provide the former Porto youngster with competition and cover.

United’s number 20 has started all 15 of the Red Devils’ games this season and it doesn’t look like the Portugal international will be getting a rest anytime soon.

Despite being unavailable for selection, it doesn’t look like Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the type of player that suits Ten Hag’s ethos and the £50m signing from Crystal Palace three years ago will eventually be moved on.

Ethan Laird is currently impressing during his season-long loan at Queens Park Rangers and Brandon Williams has recently been pictured running at Carrington.

But Ten Hag is keen to have two quality players in every position and Frimpong could potentially be the man to push and challenge Dalot for the right-back berth.
