A player who transferred from Sheffield United to Man City shows growth

The 14-year-old plays for the Blades’ U15 side, but his talents have been evident from a young age and he has attracted attention from a number of bigger clubs.

Earlier month, journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that City had agreed to sign Midwood, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Leeds United, and Newcastle United also keen on his signature.

But now the latest update from Romano is that City has beaten the competition and sealed the deal.

“Done, completed. Manchester City has signed U15 Sheffield United top talent Kylan Midwood, it’s done and sealed,” Romano wrote on his Twitter account.

“More than four clubs beaten to the signing with the mission to develop the young players at the best level in the Academy.”

The United academy is known for producing top young talents, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker, and Aaron Ramsdale all starting their careers at the club.

They will be hoping that Midwood is the last of their youngsters to move on, with striker Iliman Ndiaye’s future currently the subject of much speculation as he continues to star in the first team.

This is a hugely exciting move for Midwood.

The opportunity to sign for the Premier League champions and develop in their academy system was far too good for him to turn down.

While Midwood is only 14 and has a long way to go to reach senior level, City boss Pep Guardiola has shown he is willing to provide a pathway for the club’s younger players, such as the likes of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer.

United will be disappointed to lose him, but there is an inevitability that bigger clubs will poach youngsters, even without them making any first-team appearances.

But the hope for United is that they will be rewarded in the future if they have inserted any kind of sell-on fee that will give them a profit should Midwood be sold for big money later in his career.

With their academy continuing to produce talented prospects, it is positive for the club in the long term both on and off the pitch.
