Why a January James Maddison deal “could yet be done” despite Leicester’s opposition to paying £45 million

James Maddison of Leicester is still a “leading” target for Newcastle, according to ESPN’s Mark Ogden, and the East Midlands club might have to sell if the midfielder refuses to sign a new contract.

The Foxes turned down the Magpies’ two offers to sign the England international during the summer, with our final offer coming in at around £45 million.

The 26-year-old’s contract only has 18 months left, and according to ESPN, Brendan Rodgers needs to sell to raise money, so it’s possible that Leicester will try to sell the player in January.

Maddison has been King Power Stadium’s standout performer this season, scoring 11 goals and dishing out assists in just 13 games to earn his spot in the England World Cup team.

Eddie Howe is thought to be a big fan of the England international, so if he were to become available for the right price, he would be the perfect choice to support our European push.
