Newcastle United has been given permission to pursue James Maddison in the January transfer window.

Leicester City midfielder is seen as the Magpies’ number-one transfer priority as the transfer window ticks down

The transfer window has yet to catch fire at Newcastle United with plenty of names linked but no bodies having come through the door.

The latest talk is of Newcastle having pulled out of the running to land Real Valladolid’s in-demand right-back Ivan Fresneda.

The 18-year-old was thought to be the perfect successor to Kieran Trippier but is now expected to choose between Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.

The news will come as a blow to Magpies fans who placed Fresneda second on their list of January transfer window priorities.

Newcastle supporters were asked to rank 13 potential January signings in order of priority through our Rank Your Targets tool. And despite a clamoring for Fresneda, he finished some way behind fans’ number one target, Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

Maddison’s World Cup injury has seen him fall off the radar somewhat following a summer of intense speculation surrounding a move away from the King Power. With his Foxes contract ending in 2024 this window is one of the last opportunities for Leicester to demand a sizable fee for the England international.

Although talk of a move has died down, Newcastle fans continue to place him at the top of the club’s transfer priorities. Sergej Milinkovi-Savi of Lazio is another name that has been heavily linked with a move to the northeast, finishing just behind Fresneda in our poll.

With Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona rumored to be interested in the Serbian, Magpies fans may be disappointed.

It also appears to be a no-go for the fourth-ranking player in our results, Youssoufa Moukoko. The Germany international, labeled “the biggest talent in the world” by Erling Haaland, has recently signed a new contract at Borussia Dortmund, committing himself to the Bundesliga club until 2026.

Another Leicester City man in Youri Tielemans is seen as a more realistic option and he pipped Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram to fifth place. At the other end of the scale, the signing of Napoli winger Hirving Lozano was seen as the lowest of priorities, with the Mexican finishing rock-bottom in our poll.

And just one place above him was Mattheus Franca which suggests there won’t be much rejoicing on Tyneside should the reported early talks with the Flamengo teenager progress to a January signing.
