Henderson was forced off after 19 minutes of his first appearance for Palace since joining United for £20 million in the summer, as the Eagles were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by his previous side.

Henderson had wanted to mount a claim for the Palace No. 1 spot, but he was replaced by Sam Johnstone and is now on the sidelines. Roy Hodgson, Palace manager, said: “Often we have to wait a day or two before they can even do the scan, so at the moment we just know that he had a very unfortunate end to a game that he was really looking forward to playing.”

Palace’s injury woes are worsening, with the club currently missing seven players, including winger Michael Olise and new acquisitions Jefferson

Lerma and Matheus Franca.

The Eagles’ performance last night was dismal, and they return to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.

“Unless we play better,” Hodgson confessed, “it’s indicative [of what might happen].”
